Burnham Older People's Action Group (BOPAG)

Burnham’s newest group for people aged 50 and over had its first meeting in January 2005. BOPAG meets on the 3rd Monday of each month from 10.30am – 12 noon at the Methodist Church, Eastfield Road, Burnham.

The aim of the Group is to promote the welfare and interests of older people in Burnham and its surrounding area and to this end the Group has arranged a varied programme with visits so far from the Crime Reduction Adviser, the Handy Van Service and from Dominic Grieve, MP.

At the Group’s first meeting in January people were asked to identify issues which they hoped the new Group might be able to address and many matters were raised including, for example, recent changes to concessionary bus passes, environmental problems and anti social behaviour.  Several people also expressed the wish for a daytime gentle exercise class in Burnham to take the place of one that had recently closed.  Following on from a very successful “taster” session in April, weekly chair based exercise sessions now take place at the Methodist Church. These are held from 9.45am – 10.15 and the cost is £1 per week. The teacher is Donna Ward who already runs several other very popular classes in Slough.

On the first Monday of the month as part of the “Simply Walk” scheme there is a walk from the Methodist Church starting from 10.30am and many members of BOPAG join in with these walks which are about 2 miles in length.

Burnham Older People’s Action Group is the first of its kind in South Bucks although there are several OPAG’s operating successfully in other parts of Buckinghamshire and many others across the country. By providing a forum for older people to meet together OPAG’s not only provide an opportunity for members to address a wide variety of local issues but also on occasion to add their voices to those of older people nationally, for example through “Better Government for Older People”; a thriving movement of organisations working in partnership to change attitudes and services in order to achieve an improved society for older people right across the UK.

If you are aged 50 and over and are interested in becoming a member of Burnham Older People’s Action Group please contact Shirley Shaw, Burnham Health Promotion Trust on 01628 661441. Alternatively just come along to the Methodist Church on the 3rd Monday of the month – meetings begin at 10.30am with tea and coffee available from 10.15. We look forward to seeing you.
