Crime Prevention

Seasonal Advice:

Some of the main points on which important advice is given are:

In relation to your Car, perhaps loaded with new gifts -

Always lock doors and windows and use a steering lock.

Never leave keys in the ignition and the car unattended.

Keep presents out of sight. If they can be seen, they can be stolen.

Park in a well lit area or your car could make someone else's Christmas.

Thieves look in glove compartments first for mobile phones and other valuables - take them with you.

In relation to your home -

Make sure all windows and doors are locked.

Keep presents out of sight.

Hall tables are the first place thieves look for valuables.

Going on holiday? Leave lights and a radio on timer switches; ask a neighbour to go in to collect mail.

Use a door chain and viewer, only open the door to visitors when you are happy with their identity.

In relation to your portable property -

Lock bikes and and get them marked with your postcode and house number.

Secure your shed with a bolt and padlock and consider fitting an alarm.

Don't leave your drink alone, not even for a minute.

In relation to cheap offers -

If you are offered a quality product for a bargain, ensure that the source is genuine.

Other regular tips that apply at all times of the year include:

Postcode your electrical goods, such as DVD players and computers, with an ultra violet pen or permanent marker, and make an inventory of these items including brand names & serial numbers. UV pens can be obtained from crime reduction advisors or the Neighbourhood Watch Office  You can also register all mobile equipment such as cameras and i-pods on the national database www.menduk.org. The police have access to this database so that stolen items can be returned to their owners.

Ensure all your external windows & locks are secure, and fit additional or upgraded locks where necessary.

Consider motion sensor lighting by external doors.
