The Burnham Health Promotion Trust

Young People’s Projects

The Community Profile Report 1999 highlighted a number of issues relating to young people's health and well-being and since then the Trust has developed and supported many imaginative projects including:

Health Awareness - For several months during 1999-2000, Nicky Ridley, Young People's Project Worker, worked with young people in local schools and at Burnham Youth Centre exploring health related issues in imaginative and interesting ways. 36 young people aged between 10 and 14 attended a Weekend Trip Away in May 2000 to the Green Park Centre near Aylesbury where they had the opportunity to try out activities such as rope climbing, archery and mountaineering as well as participating in health awareness workshops.

"It’s my Life"  2001 to  2004  - Several groups of Year 10 students  from local schools participated in  this  health educational project  developed by Nicky Ridley, Young People's Project Worker. "It's my Life" aimed to help young people take control of their lives and boost self esteem, particularly with regard to relationships. As a part of the course students had the opportunity to care for a virtual baby for the weekend. More information from Dawn Diprose, Young People’s Project Worker.

Recreational Survey - In July  2002 the Trust undertook a questionnaire survey of the recreational facilities of Burnham. Nearly 400 children aged 8 - 15 took part from three schools: St Peters C of E School, Lent Rise Combined School, and Burnham Upper School. The results of the survey based on 376 completed questionnaires have been published  and may be viewed in full here.

"Keep Our Park Clean Campaign" - In June 2003, following on from the Recreational Survey, the Trust organised this campaign to encourage everyone to keep Burnham Park clean.

Keep Our Park Clean Campaign

Following on from the survey In July 2002 when 350 young people aged 11 - 15 took part it was decided to hold this campaign in June 2003.  In the survey dropping litter, broken glass and owners failing to clear up their dog's mess had been the three most commonly reported antisocial activities in Burnham Park.

During the week commencing June 9th, Scoopy Doo and his friends were on patrol in Burnham Park talking to dog walkers and other Park users and encouraging everyone to keep the Park clean.

Summer activities for young people - In 2003 the Trust produced a booklet with details of many local holiday activities which was widely distributed through local schools and was also available on the website.

Picnics in the Park - In the summer of 2003 and again in 2005 the Trust were very pleased to be involved with these events  organised by Burnham Oasis Project.

Summer Holiday Sports Scheme -
Also in the summer of 2003 the Trust in partnership with local charity, the Hitcham Trust, arranged for ten local young people to attend a variety of week long courses at the Thames Valley Athletics Centre.

Intergenerational Project - Since 2002 children from Years 5 and 6 at St Peter's School, Burnham have been meeting regularly with residents of Perry House sheltered housing scheme and have shared a variety of activities and discussions.
